Project Descriptions

Back in 2009, DCCD conducted structural investigative work for Manila Water’s old San Juan Reservoir, which consisted of two chambers. The intention of the Phase 1 Study was to upgrade chamber one through structural retrofitting—to ensure compliance with the current codes and standards—and to replace chamber two with a larger storage volume. A detailed hydraulic analysis was undertaken to determine the most appropriate dimensions and water levels of the proposed replacement of chamber two.

However, issues such as retrofitting, construction costs, and serviceability life of the reservoir came into light as the Phase 1 Study was coming to a close. After careful deliberation with its Technical Working Group, Manila Water’s management opted to demolish both chambers and construct a new reservoir that would satisfy the required water demand.

The Phase 2 Study covered the detailed engineering design of the new 111-million liter reservoir (the largest in the country); this was provided by DCCD to replace the existing one.

A year later in 2010, Manila Water contracted DCCD again to serve as its project management consultant, responsible for the project’s bidding and awarding, pre-construction, construction management, and post-construction activities. Engineering services for the project were completed in 2012.
